2016 – 17 ConnCAS Mentoring Program

Connecticut College Access and Success Program (ConnCAS) at NCC – 55 students

Students are low-income, first generation college students who are unfamiliar with the college process.  These are students who can flourish with the addition of one more caring adult in their lives.



The four objectives of the ConnCAS Mentoring Program:

1. Goal Setting

2. Academic Engagement

3. Extracurricular Involvement

4. College and Career Planning

Mentor Requirements:

  • ·         Must be a college graduate
  • ·         Be available for a minimum of 2 one hour or 4 half hour mentoring sessions per month
  • ·         Submit to a criminal background check (or provide a letter from Human Resources stating that background checks are conducted at the volunteer’s place of employment)
  • ·         Participate in a mandatory training session

Mentor Training and Orientation

A thorough review of the training and orientation program will be conducted with new mentors. Each mentor will receive a written handbook which will be described during the orientation. Questions are welcome and mentors are encouraged to interact with one another at that time.

Instructions include:

  • ·         Identifying learning barriers
  • ·         Suggested weekly activities and schedule options
  • ·         Weekly goal sheets to be completed by the mentor and the Program Coordinator after each session
  • ·         Brief discussion with the Program Coordinator about the goal sheets following the session
  • ·         Grade and test result discussions
  • ·         Mentor application form
  • ·         Permission slip for participation in media activities
  • ·         Red flags – what to do if something doesn’t feel right?
  • ·         Closure contract
